Even with the rain, Laney’s mood was almost euphoric—until she walked in the house and saw the bouquet of red roses on the table in the entryway. With trepidation, she pulled out the card and read the note.

Laney, I’m so sorry. Forgive me for being such a jerk. Please say we can be friends. Hopefully, Matthew.

Her heart sank as Laney saw her aunt come out of the kitchen, already knowing just what she would think.

“Are those from Matthew?” she asked brightly. “Wasn’t that thoughtful? What a nice young man . . . and just what you need to cheer you up on this stormy day.”

“They’re really nice,” was all Laney could say.

Turning, she trudged upstairs to take a shower, all the light and happiness draining out of her and right into the blood-red flowers—and the expectations they symbolized.

By the time she got home from work that evening, her perspective was back, and she felt better. After all, no one would make her go out with Matthew. She would just ignore the roses; let them wither right along with her relationship with their sender. She even saw acceptance in Aunt Helen’s eyes when she told her that Gabe would be picking her up the next morning for their all-day date.
